Start MSIE Browser Even Replaced by MS-Edge Browser

Internet Explorer 11 (on Windows 10)

Still miss your MS Internet Explorer browser?

Here's a way to "start" your IE browser even it has been replaced by MS Edge.

  1. Press "win" key, and start typing "Internet Options".
  2. Click on "Internet Options", and you should see "Internet Properties" control panel.
  3. Click on "Programs" tab.
  4. Click on "Manage add-ons" button, and see the "Manage Add-ons" window.
  5. At the bottom, click on "Learn more about toolbars and extensions" link.
  6. MSIE browser is back!! 😜

Note that this method works in both Windows 10 and 11. Let's start 🏄 with MSIE again.

Activate ActiveX Filtering in IE9

ActiveX Filtering is a new feature available in IE9 and it is disable by default.

It allows a whitelist style protection scheme. When enabled NO ActiveX Controls are allowed to run, then when you go to a site that requires ActiveX Controls, if you trust the site you can add them to the whitelist. Only websites on the list will be able to run ActiveX Controls.

To enable ActiveX Filtering, go to Tools Menu>Safety and then select the ActiveX Filtering Option.

Windows Update Error 80240030

When you get the Windows Update error code 80240030, then you are most likely having issue with:

  • Can't update your windows. Windows Update fails.
  • Can't access your proxy setting in MSIE. IE crashes once you click the "LAN setting".
  • IE can't access Internet (thru proxy).
I'm having all these issues since I upgrade to IE9. And here I find the solution to fix/repair  the 80240030 error for me:
  1. Open command prompt (with Administrator mode).
  2. Type "netsh winhttp reset proxy"
  3. Type "net stop wuauserv"
  4. Type "net start wuauserv"
It does works in Windows 7 (32-bit & 64-bit) too. Enjoy!

Why Do So Many Geeks Hate Internet Explorer?

It is a great article explaining why geeks hate IE. It will surprise you when you know that:

  • IE3 ('96) introduces CSS, Java applets and ActiveX.
  • IE4 ('94) introduces Dynamic HTML, Active desktop Integration, and support cross platform.
  • IE5 ('99) introduces AJAX.

An upcoming security feature from Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 (IE8). This new IE8 feature intends to make reflected / “Type-1” Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities much more difficult to exploit.

IE and m4v file

Zero day in IE 6,7, 8 again. Saw it at http://packetstormsecurity.org/filedesc/ieatm4v.c.html. It is an exploit for m4v file parsing.

m4v is an iTune Video file extension. See http://www.fileinfo.net/extension/m4v for more detail.

Internet Explorer 6 Window "location" Handling Vulnerability

Typical cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability found in IE6.

The vulnerability is caused due to an input validation error when handling the "location" or "location.href" property of a window object. This can be exploited by a malicious website to e.g. open a trusted site and execute arbitrary script code in a user"s browser session in context of the trusted site.

Recommendation:

  • To company: Upgrade to IE7.

  • To user: Switch to Firefox.
